What is the Pelvic Floor and Diastasis Recti?

The Pelvic Floor

The Pelvic floor is a group of muscles at the base of the pelvis that act like a sling to support the pelvic organs. The pelvic floor muscles (PFM) control continence by opening and closing the urethra and anal canals for voiding as well as help to stabilize the pelvis and spine. The PFM support posture and have a respiratory function. They also help to enhance sexual function and arousal.

The pelvic floor is part of the body’s core. Movement originates and transfers through the pelvic floor. It’s our center of gravity and supports the posture and assists in breathing. The PFM are like any other muscles and needs to be able to relax and lengthen as well as contract strong enough to accomplish the task at hand. When muscles are too weak or stuck in a shorten, contracted state dysfunction occurs.

Pelvic floor dysfunction can present in many ways and are often unique to each women which is why a personalized approach to healing is best. Leaking is never normal. Back and pelvic pain can be resolved. You can return to your favorite activities as you heal and learn how to be successful in your body.

Diastasis Recti (DR)

The Right and left sides of the abdominal wall are connected at the linea alba which run down the middle of the abdomen. A diastasis is a stretching of the linea alba not an actual tear of the muscle. The linea alba also connects to the pelvis and ribcage. Movement patterns including these body parts can contribute to a diastasis recti. It’s important to be aware of the forces being placed on the core for proper management to allow for healing.

Alignment matters when healing. Understanding how to manage intra-abdominal pressure is crucial. It’s not always about the exercises or how much you perform them, sometimes it’s what we do the rest of the day. How do you breathe or carry your body. Poor body mechanics when lifting or working at a desk can undo your efforts to heal.

DR naturally occurs during pregnancy and for some the gap just doesn’t close naturally. Lose the mummy tummy and stop feeling pregnant when your are not. Move on from back pain and further damage to the body. Heal the gap!
